Gear not working on defense?

It looks like Showdown perks are overwriting the effects of gear on defense. At least, it's overwriting the text in the Bonuses section of the superstart matchup before the match -- and the gear doesn't seem to do anything during the match. Or maybe it's just everyone with a Junkyard Dog on defense doesn't have his gear...
